So we all remember back in 2005 how the really rumors started up. “Blink 182 is splitting up!” And the skeptics among us all knew that they really weren’t. Those same skeptics laughed at themselves when they really did split up but were sure they would join back up really soon. Well the skeptics were right, five years, a plane crash, and two bands later.
Blink 182 split up in 2005 and four years later, in 2009, joined back up, but not after forming two successful bands, +44 and Angels and Airwaves. Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker started up +44 while Tom DeLonge started up Angels and Airwaves.
While both bands were widely popular due to Blink 182′s reformation +44 has gone on hiatus. Mark Hoppus has commented that the band might get back together but that he is focusing on Blink 182 at the moment. The band’s first album When Your Heart Stops Beating reached the number ten position on the US charts. A sophomore album was in production but was delayed due to funding issues with their record company.
Angels and Airwaves, however, is still continuing to record music and has a record due out on Valentines Day 2010 titled LOVE. This will be the band’s third album after both of their last albums reached the single digits on the Billboard Top 200.
Tom Delonge has stated that Angels and Airwaves will not be going anywhere and will continue to record music and perform even with Blink 182′s reformation.
The reasons behind the split have been accredited to Tom DeLonge’s desire to spend more time with his family and overall tensions between the band members. Blink 182 disbanded when the band’s manager called Hoppus and Barker to tell them that DeLonge had quit the band.
In 2008 the band marred with tragedy when the Lear Jet that Travis Barker was aboard crashed shortly after take off, killing four people. Barker and DJ AM were the only survivors of the crash. Barker suffered from second and third degree burns on his lower body and torso. He was able to return the studio two months after the crash and made a full recovery.
Blink 182 started a tour in July 2009 and ended it in October. The band is set to start recording a new album this month and are negotiating release dates with their label, Interscope. A 2011 album release is tentatively planned. They also have a European tour kicking off this summer.
